Snow is inevitable here in Minnesota.  One snow flake isn’t necessarily harmful. However, what’s the impact of more than one snow flake?

These are tips to consider for any person regardless of where you live, what type of building, especially in areas with winter and snow:

  • More than one snowflake can be heavy which may cause a roof to collapse. Therefore, a good idea is to have a long-handled snow rake to remove as much snow as can be **safely** reached.  Removing snow will remove weight and pressure from the roof which in return will lessen the chances of a roof caving inward.

  • Snow becomes ice which can cause an ice dam. An ice dam can have long icicles that hang off the gutters.  More than one snowflake will again become heavy, pulling on the gutters which can break the gutters off the building.

  • When more than one snowflake melts into concrete cracks, snow will become ice then swell causing the cracks to become wider, uneven, or buckle in other ways.

  • One snowflake can be a beautiful sight to see all the intricate crystals. In extreme cases, massive amounts of snow can accumulate to cause pressure against windows causing windows to break.

  • During the winter, freezing temperatures most likely cause snow to stay around. The ground is frozen.  A sudden temperature spike can cause the snow to melt but not be able to absorb into the ground since the dirt is still frozen.  The melted snow will find other ways to drain, perhaps cracks in a house foundation.
